However, some species of mockingbirds are endangered. The northern mockingbird, Mimus polyglottos, is an omnipresent bird that is found in many suburbs. It is one of the most widespread songbirds in North America and is found all over the country. The bird is also extremely territorial and defends its territory. It attacks intruders including hawks, house pets and even animals larger than it.

The Mockingbird is plain in appearance and weighs less than 2 ounces. It measures between nine and 11 inches in length including the tail. Females and males are alike however, the male has more of a dark head. Mockingbirds live together for the rest of their lives and are monogamous. For instance, the northern mockingbird is vulnerable to collisions with buildings and to poisoning by pesticides. The Floreana and Espanola mockingbirds are both critically endangered. They have a narrow range, and a small population. The Mockingbird is a beloved symbol of southern culture. It is featured in folklore, art, stories, and in literature.
